The particle と (to) has three essential uses at N5 level: listing nouns exhaustively (A and B), marking a companion (with someone), and quoting speech or thoughts (saying “that…”). It’s one of the most versatile particles you’ll use daily.

と is a multi‑function particle. At the JLPT N5 level, you will see it used in three distinct ways:
私は田中さんと映画を見ました。わたしはたなかさんとえいがをみました。Watashi wa Tanaka-san to eiga o mimashita.
I watched a movie with Mr. Tanaka. (accompaniment)

Use と when listing all items, and や when giving examples from a larger group. “I like dogs and cats (just those two)” → と; “I like dogs, cats, etc.” → や.
Yes, と is the standard quotative particle and can be used with any verb of communication or thought, such as 書く (write), 聞く (hear), 答える (answer).
It stays in its plain form exactly as it would be said/thought. For polite speech, the quoting verb itself can be polite (言いました) while the quote remains plain.
