Polite offers & suggestions — “Shall I?” / “Shall we?”
JLPT N5 文法 〜ましょうか 解説 (申し出・提案)
⏱️ Study time: 4–6 minutes
〜ましょうか (mashou ka) is the polite way to offer help or suggest doing something together. Add it to the verb stem to say "Shall I do ~?" or "Shall we do ~?" — one of the most useful patterns for daily life in Japan.
💡 Toggle furigana, hiragana, or romaji for easier reading.
〜ましょうか is the polite volitional form combined with the question particle か. It is used to offer assistance or gently suggest an activity involving the speaker. The nuance is "Shall I do it for you?" or "How about we do it?"
窓を開けましょうか。まどをあけましょうか。Mado o akemashou ka.
Shall I open the window?

Yes. When the context is a group activity, it's a gentle suggestion. そろそろ出ましょうか = Shall we leave soon?
There is no direct negative volitional form. To say "Shall I not do it?" use 〜ないでおきましょうか (very advanced, beyond N5). At N5 level, you don't need a negative offer pattern.
No. ましょうか only attaches to verbs. For adjectives, you cannot offer "Shall I be quiet?" with this pattern. Use other constructions.
Next: ましょう — the firm "let's" form.
