What is どうやって?

どうやって is a set phrase meaning "by what means" or "how" (method). It always asks about the way something is done, not the reason. It is the standard way to ask for instructions, transportation, or process.

  • どうやって + Verb: どうやって行く? (How do you go?)
  • It is the polite, neutral way to ask "how". More casual: どうやって? alone.
  • Often answered with ~で (by means of): バスで行きます.

How to Pronounce

どうやって: do u ya tte (the "tte" is a small pause)

⚡ どうやって vs どう vs どうして: The Method/Reason/State Trio

Word Meaning Asks about Example
どうやってBy what meansMethod/wayどうやって行く
どうHow / what aboutState/opinion映画はどう?
どうしてWhyReasonどうして来ない
⚠️ JLPT Trap: Don't confuse どうやって (method) with どうして (reason). If the answer involves 電車で or こうやって, you need どうやって.

Common Mistakes

どうやって学校に行きますか (intending "why")
どうして学校に行きますか (why do you go to school?)
(If you mean "why", use どうして; どうやって is "how" as method)
どうやってですか (asking for reason)
どうしてですか (why?)
("どうやってですか" exists but asks specifically about method; "why?" is どうしてですか)
