JLPTジェイエルピーティー N5エヌゴ 文法ぶんぽう 助詞じょし「で」解説かいせつ (場所ばしょ手段しゅだん)

⏱️ Study time: 5–7 minutes

The particle で (de) has two main meanings at JLPT N5 level: it marks the location where an action takes place (“at/in”), and the means or tool used to perform an action (“by/with”). Mastering で will let you say where you study, what you eat with, and how you travel.

🚀 JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: Which sentence correctly means “I study at the library” using the location‑of‑action particle?

Answer: A (図書館で勉強します). で marks the place where the action (study) happens. B is wrong because に marks existence or destination, not an action location. C is wrong because を marks a direct object.

Location of action (at / in)
Function 2

What is で?

is a multi‑function particle. At the JLPT N5 level, you need to know its two core uses:

  • Location of action: indicates where an action takes place (e.g., study at the library).
  • Means / tool: indicates what is used to do something (e.g., eat with chopsticks, go by bus).

⚡ Two Main Uses of で

I read books at the library.
Means / toolTool / Language + で + Verbペンで名前なまえきます。ぺんでなまえをかきます。Pen de namae o kakimasu.

2. Which particle should be used for means of transport: “by train”?

3. “I am in the classroom.” Choose the correct sentence.

🎯 JLPT N5 tip: Students often confuse で and に. Remember: に for existence (います/あります), で for activities. A quick self‑check: if you can add “and I do something there” after the location, use で.
